Smoking Ban in the workplace and public places

The smoking ban

The UK Government smoking ban in public places and the workplace becomes law as of 1st July 2007. Already large corporations such as BT and local NHS Trusts have implemented the ban ahead of schedule.

The smoking ban - The problem

If you work for the MOD and want a smoke, you may have to drive miles off premise to do so. If you are an NHS nurse you actually have to change out of uniform before you can go off premise to smoke.

Aside from the obvious health issues and cost of smoking, which employer wants to possibly lose the staff who just cannot comply with the ban? Who wants to be fined?

Employers that fail to comply with the law could be fined between £200 and £1,000 for failing to display 'no smoking' signs, and between £200 and £2,500 for failing to enforce the ban. Employees could face a £50 penalty for flouting the ban.

Companies in the US now outlaw smoking completely, even away from work, and actually test employees to see if they are still smokers.

It is a fact that some 70% of existing smokers wish to become non-smokers, and and that these smokers are ten times more likely to give up with support.

The smoking ban - The solution

To help employers retain staff, improve health and comply with the smoking ban, Weller Associates have devised a corporate strategy to help companies comply with the smoking ban in a very cost effective way. This can be achieved with a downloadable stop smoking hypnotherapy session via the online arm of Weller Associates, through a Stop smoking download from Hypnotic Tracks.

A stop smoking session can be downloaded instantly (CD if preferred). With the download comes comprehensive back up and coaching. Newsletter follow up provides further support and encouragement. Plus survey sweeps are conducted to monitor results from beginning to end. In-house support with group and 121 sessions are also available thus providing comprehensive back up.

Weller Associates started working with the BBC starting in January 2007 to run their corporate stop smoking campaign. The project is using a package of online resources and in house group stop smoking sessions to ensure that employees are helped to stop smoking in the quickest and the most cost effective way - Full coaching support and counselling have also been made available.

There are 28,000 employees in the BBC so it is an exciting opportunity for Weller Associates. This is part of the BBC healthier lifestyle and work-life balance campaign for employees. Click here to see the BBC Club page on our downloads site.

Why be caught out by the ban? Not everyone wants a nicotine substitute, drug of some sort, or to be "counselled" and nothing else. Click here to contact Weller Associates for an initial consultation free of charge, or click here to download stop smoking track now.

The smoking ban - Non hypnotherapy based solutions

"Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little". (New Scientist, Volume 136 issue 1845 31 Oct 1992, page 6)

What are the other options for stopping smoking?
  • Champix (Drug) up to 22% (with side effects)
  • Accupuncture up to 25% success rate
  • Zyban (Drug) with its side effects, up to 21% success rate
  • Nicotine patches (with their side effects) up to 13%
  • Nicotine Gum (with side effects) up to 11%

New Scientist vol 136 issue 1845 p6
To find the most effective method to stop smoking, Frank Schmidt and research student Chockalingham Viswesvaran from the University of Iowa conducted a meta-analysis, bringing together the results of more than 600 studies totalling nearly 72,000 people. The results, which were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than Nicotine Replacement.

"..93% of Niotine patch users fail within a half year..." (Freedom From Tobacco - Quit Smoking Now).

More details on the non hypnotherapy based methods of quitting smoking:
  • Champix (Chantix) - 2006 studies boast a 1 in 5 one-year quit smoking rate but were inflated by 16 one-on-one counseling sessions and telephone support. Real-world use rates will be substantially lower

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) - Replacement nicotine delivered by the patch, gum, lozenge, spray or inhaler comes from the exact same tobacco plant as nicotine in cigarettes. Clinical efficacy and real-world effectiveness are two different standards. What those selling NRT fail to reveal is that in no real-world quitting methods survey to date (California, Minn., Quebec, London, Maryland, Australia) have those using NRT performed better than those quitting without it. A 2003 study combined and averaged the 7 OTC nicotine patch and gum studies. It found that only 7% were still not smoking at 6 months. It gets worse. A 1993 study (Tonnesen) found that 0% of second-time patch users succeeded in quitting for 6 months and a 1995 study (Gourlay) reported a 1.6% six-month quitting rate

  • Zyban - Zyban (bupropion) is a dopamine uptake inhibitor in pill form. In all real-world use surveys to date it has yet to perform better than those quitting without it, at rates similar to NRT

Research by The New Scientist Magazine (1992) has shown hypnotherapy to be the safest and quickest way to quit smoking. People were six times more likely to quit with one session of hypnosis and remain non-smokers over 12 months after their session, compared to those who used Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

The advantage of hypnosis is that it removes the dependency and craving of quitting without risking the side effects of rashes and potential long term damage that has been associated with Zyban. Those using NRT are know to have to try to quit on average six times before succeeding, thereby investing heavily in substitute products and addictive chemicals, before developing a stronger will or abandoning any belief in quitting altogether.

Studies in America have shown that hypnosis is the most effective method of stopping smoking for good with an 85% success rate in just one session! This contrasts with the low rates of 10% success for those using nicotine gum and 6% compared with willpower alone. (Mathews, R (1992) New Scientist, Vol. 136, No. 1845, p.6.)
